Neighbor near fatal crash calls intersection dangerous

Wheatland, N.Y. – Route 36 is the first thing Loretta Ziminski sees when she steps out her front door.

The state road is also the target of her ire.

She says screeching tires and crunching metal is a common sound at the spot where Rt. 36 meets North Road.

“It’s obvious they need something more pronounced. I don’t know how many lives or souls have to be lost, but it should stop,” Ziminski said.

Last Tuesday morning, a car carrying five recent Cal-Mum graduates rolled through the intersection and into the path of a tractor-trailer traveling at around 55 miles per hour on Rt. 36.

Ziminski said there needs to be more signage and a flashing light.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday deputies have not noticed an alarming number of accidents, but said they will review the corner’s safety record in light of the crash.

The state Department of Transportation did not respond to the safety issue Tuesday.
