Largest payment to gov't in WNY history

Rochester, N.Y. -- A Rochester business owner who pleaded guilty to tax evasion is making the largest restitution payment ever made in Western New York.

John Gizzi, 64, plead guilty to felony charges of filing false tax returns in 2008 and 2009, and the company he owned, Rochester Machinery Suppliers Inc., plead guilty to aiding and abetting in the preparation of that tax return.

By filing false returns and utilizing other deductions, the U.S. Attorneys Office says Gizzi concealed about $5 million.

Gizzi and his lawyer had no comment as they left court today.

U.S. Attorney Bill Hocul said Gizzi and the company paid back $11.5 million the most ever that had to be paid back to the government in Western New York.

Gizzi will be sentenced in September, and faces a maximum of 46 months in jail.

He has been released on his own recognizance.
