Indictment unsealed for Ralph Strong, Jr.
Rochester, N.Y. - 13WHAM News has learned the charges listed against the Rochester man accused of shooting a Rochester Police officer during a chase and shootout on N. Goodman St. last month.
The indictment against Ralph Strong, 31, was unsealed Friday morning.
It lists six criminal charges, two of which are releated to a double homicide shooting on Central Ave. Jahmia Singleton, 31, and Reggie Johnson, 27, were killed in that shooting.
The charges include:
Two charges of 1st-degree murder, one for each victim in the Central Ave; Jamiah Singleton and Reggie Johnson were killed on June 24th.
One charge of attempted aggravated murder; this is for the alleged shooting of Sgt. Flamur Zenelovic on June 27th.
One charge of assault of a police officer; for the injuries St. Zenelovic sustained.
One charge of 1st degree assault; this is for the alleged shooting of Gene McDougal of Henrietta during a gunfire exchange with police on June 27th.
One charge of reckless endangerment; this is for allegedly engaging in conduct which created a grave risk of death during the police pursuit of Strong Jr. on June 27th.
A seventh charge was also part of this indictment, but remains sealed. It is unknown what the charge is and who it is filed against.
Monroe County Assistant District Attorney Matthew Schwartz said he is not at liberty to discuss that charge or unnamed suspect because it remains a sealed matter.
Members of the Johnson and Singleton families were in court to witness the indictment. There was no police presence in the room beyond the typical collection of court security deputies.
Strong pleaded not guilty to all charges. He was able to walk into court and stand before the judge but had a noticeable limp as well as bandages and what appeared to be a cast on his left arm.
"He is very sore he was shot 5 times, he has 8 holes in him, said Strongs lawyer Paul Vacca. He was shot twice in one arm, he was shot in the hand right in here, he is recovering but it's a slow process so he's a hurting guy right now."
The father of Reggie Johnson also showed up at court but just missed the arraignment. He explained that his son was in the wrong place at the wrong time and that he has thought often of Singletons family and the families of Sgt. Zenelovic and Gene McDougal.
"From what I understand this was uncalled for, Bobby Johnson said of his sons death. What I heard was that it was over a young lady but I don't know I wasn't there. All I know is he's gone."
