RG&E warns customers about phone scam
Rochester, N.Y. — Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) is warning customers about a phone scam by someone claiming to work for the company.
Several customers have received bill collection calls from someone identifying himself as “Carl” who claims to represent RG&E.
Customers are warned their services may be shut off immediately unless they purchase a “Green Dot MoneyPak Card” and call a phone number starting with “347” with the card information.
The caller mostly targets small businesses and restaurants in Rochester and the surrounding area.
RG&E offers these tips to keep account information secure:
- RG&E will not call a customer for payment if his or her account is in good standing
- Customers who need to make an urgent payment should do so by calling RG&E directly at 1-800-743-2110 to insure that their account is properly credited
- Customers who have any questions about a call they have received for an overdue payment are likewise urged to contact RG&E at the 1.800.743.2110 number.
