Parking problems for PGA

Rochester, N.Y. The second PGA Championship practice round drew a large crowd at Oak Hill Country Club. So much so, that the Blue Lot on the Monroe Community College campus was closed by 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Cars that tried to park at MCC were rerouted to the Grey Lot at the Rochester Tech Park in Gates. The Grey Lot is nine miles west from MCC and is further from Oak Hill Country Club.

PGA Championship Senior Director David Charles says this problem was not anticipated.
Charles believes that many people are not parking in their designated parking lots.

According to Charles, ticketholders were assigned a parking lot depending on their zip code when their tickets went out in the mail.

Because MCC is closer to Oak Hill, some people seem to be parking at MCC regardless of their assignments.

Charles urges PGA spectators to park in their assigned lots.

The best experience for everybody would be to go to that designated lots and the great thing about those lots is that you are dropped off so close to the clubhouse, Charles explained.

Pam Curtis, of Conesus, says she was assigned to the MCC lot, but when her family tried to find a space on Tuesday, they were not able to.

That was frustrating because no one told us that that the lot was full, Curtis said.
We went around the whole thing and then we parked where the students were supposed to park and [the parking attendants] said No! No! No! You have to go all the way [to the Tech Park].

Curtis believes trying to find parking took about an hour of their day.

The Rowsicks of Bergen parked at the Rochester Tech Park to start with because thats where they were assigned.

They say their experience at Oak Hill and trying to find parking was fine.

They also believe that the shuttle system is better than it was in 2003, the last time the PGA Championship was played at Oak Hill.

Back then, we had to park where the fairgrounds used to be and bus in and they dropped us off some place on Monroe Avenue between a couple of stores and it was a very, very long walk to [Oak Hill], Liz Rowsick explained. This year is wonderful compared to that.

This year, the shuttle buses taking ticketholders from the parking lots to Oak Hill drops them off right near the clubhouse around the 18th hole.

Charles says that by Thursday and Friday, there will be about two-thirds more parking spaces at MCC and by the championship rounds on Saturday and Sunday, there will be double the amount of parking there is now at MCC.

Still, Charles says its important to park where you are assigned to make the process run more smoothly.
