Education and the race for Mayor

Rochester, N.Y. - With the democratic primary about a month away on Monday the Rochester Teacher's Association endorsed Mayor Tom Richards for re-election. One of the biggest issues at hand is the future of charter schools.

Mayor Richards and the Rochester Teachers Association say the focus needs to be on improving education in public schools.

There are going to be tens of thousands of children in this system for as long as any of us know, and I'm not going to turn my back on them, said Mayor Richards.

Mayoral candidate Lovely Warren believes there needs to be a change. She wants to empower parents with options, like charter schools.

My issue is not with teachers, said Warren, I believe in and I've had some great teachers all throughout my life however, my issue is with the system that continues to fail our children.

There are parallels in both plans including both Warren's and Mayor Richards' plan to address the loss of time in the classroom over summer break.
