Rep. Reed late paying taxes 38 times
Washington Rep. Tom Reed, a Republican from Corning who represents the Southern Tier and serves on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, has been late paying his taxes, according to The Buffalo News. The paper said Reed was late paying his property taxes 38 times between 2005 and 2013.
That includes 18 times since he joined Congress in late 2010. The Buffalo News reported that tax records from Steuben and Chemung counties show that he has paid nearly $3,500 in interest and penalties. "There's been over 500 payments made since I went to Congress and 38 of them have been paid late, and I accept that, Reed said Monday morning.
As a member of Congress I recognize that we should be held to a higher standard, and that's why I accept the criticism here and I recognize it."
Lead by example, its not really right to represent an area and not pay your taxes, said Noah Larham of Geneva.
Reed also called the report an attempt at character assassination and example of petty politics.
As a conservative myself and a member of the Republican party, this is one of the people I voted for, said James Kohn of Olean.
Its important that hes held to the same standard that I am, and its unsettling.
Reeds term is not up until 2014, and his likely challenger, Tompkins County Democrat Martha Robertson said she is not behind the original report on Reeds late taxes.
13WHAM News requested interviews Monday night with Reed, Seneca County GOP chair Sue Anne Fisher, and Ontario Countys GOP Chair Doug Finch.
None were available for interviews.
