Four area school districts consider merging

Seneca Falls, N.Y. Two sets of small, cash-strapped school districts near Cayuga Lake are asking voters to move forward a proposal to consolidate.

Seneca Falls Central School District wants to merge with Waterloo Central School District and South Seneca School District is looking to merge with Romulus Central School.

Bob McKeveny, Seneca Falls superintendent, held an informational meeting Thursday night at Elizabeth Cady Stanton Elementary School to defend the move.

Its a very difficult decision for the community, McKeveny said.

He said shrinking enrollment and growing expenses make consolidation one of the only ways to provide the classes and programs students need.

Voters will go to the polls on Tuesdays.

If they vote no, the proposal is dead, but if they vote yes, that just means the discussion continues.
