FDA to track medical implants

The Food and Drug Administration will begin tracking millions of medical devices, from pacemakers to hip replacements.

The new electronic system is designed to catch problematic implants earlier.

Each device will be required to have a unique code that will be stored in a database.

The system will be phased in starting next year.
