Remembering Jeffrey Newland

Pittsford, N.Y. - A Fairport husband and father found dead in a Pittsford cornfield is being remembered for his community involvement and willingness to help others.

Jeffrey Newland was found shot and killed, not far from his car, on Golf Avenue Tuesday morning.

Those who knew Newland tell us he was wonderful and passionate person who dedicated his time to connecting mentors with children.

He was wonderful, he really was outgoing, connected well with people, said Ann Marie Cook, President of Lifespan.

Newland ran the Boomer Mentors program at Lifespan for the last three years.

Jeff was known throughout the country quite frankly, for the work he did here in Rochester for the Boomer Mentors project, said Cook. The work that he did, other communities have adopted, that's how successful it was.

On Monday evening, Newland was reported missing by his family after they found his car along Golf Avenue in Pittsford.

Newland was last seen in the early morning hours Monday.

Tuesday, less than 24-hours after he was reported missing his body was found in a cornfield 200-300 yards from his car.

We did a flyover [Tuesday morning] and located Mr. Newland, said Chief Deputy Drew Forsythe, with the Monroe County Sheriffs Office. Upon investigation it was determined he was deceased with a gunshot wound.

Deputies are now asking anyone with information about his death to come forward.
We need the public's help if there was anything they saw suspicious- people, vehicles, people walking along this roadway in the early morning hours, said Forsythe.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Monroe County Sheriffs Office.
