World War II veteran honored
TULSA, Okla. (AP) - A 94-year-old World War II veteran has finally received the Prisoner of War Medal and other honors after a decades-long wait.
Phillip Coon also was presented with a Bronze Star medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge during an informal ceremony Monday night at the Tulsa International Airport.
Coon, who lives in Sapulpa in northeastern Oklahoma, was just returning from Japan where government officials there apologized to him and other veterans over how they were treated during the war.
Coon survived a Japanese labor camp and the Bataan Death March, where tens of thousands of soldiers were forced on a 65-mile trek by the Japanese military.
