11-year-old shooting victim recovering
Rochester, N.Y. - On Halloween night, 11-year-old Daesean Mathis was doing what most kids his age would do trick-or-treating.
But just five days ago, Daesean experienced the most frightening moments of his young life when he was shot in the arm after he was caught in crossfire on Chili Avenue.
On Sunday, Daesean was walking to a mini-mart on Chili Avenue near Thurston Road to get chips and drink for him and his brother. He never made it to the store.
I saw like four people standing in front of the store, Daesean recalled. Then I heard some shots and saw people running. Then I noticed I got shot. I ran behind people's cars and waited for five minutes. Then I ran through people's back yards and I ran home.
Daesean says he waited behind the car because he wanted to make sure the shooters were gone.
His home was just two blocks away and a neighbor took Daesean and his father to the hospital.
The sixth grader says he was never scared of walking to the store alone before, but now, thats all changed.
Despite all thats happened to him, he considers himself lucky because his injury wasnt more serious and he wasnt killed. He is expected to make a full recovery.
Rochester Police have arrested three men in connection with the shooting. They believe that the three men got into an argument when they started shooting and Daesean got caught in the middle.
Daesean looks forward to returning to school on Monday.
