Charges dropped against accused hit and run driver

Monroe County, N.Y. - Charges have been dropped against the man accused of a deadly hit and run crash in Pittsford.

Investigators were called to East Avenue and Kilbourn in January after receiving reports of a man lying on the side of the road.

Emergency workers found Vaughn Steele at the scene and rushed him to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Deputies believed Michael Hanna, 30, struck and killed the 26-year-old as Steele walked along the street. But Hanna left the scene, and then turned himself in several hours later.

Hanna told police he didnt think he hit anyone, and believed he hit a garbage can.

Police never thought speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

According to the Monroe County District Attorney's Office, a judge did not believe there was enough evidence to move forward with a prosecution after reviewing the Monroe County Grand Jury minutes.
