New Year's Eve busy for taxis, tow trucks
Rochester, N.Y. -- Tuesday marked the busiest night of the year for taxi and tow truck drivers.
New Years Eve wasnt all about making money for them, though. They were also trying to keep people safe.
Many of them waited along curbs or cruising Downtown Rochester, ready to jump into action at any moment.
Action Towing, based in Henrietta, cut prices for New Years Eve this year, offering to drive people home and tow their cars with them. Free bus service was also available through RTS, and many cab companies sent extra cars downtown.
Everyone works tonight, said cab driver Eric Williams. They have to be crazy not to work tonight.
Vincent Fantauzzo of Action Towing said all of the companys 30 trucks were out Tuesday night.
We could be at 50 calls at one point, and then we could be at 300, he said. We get pretty busy toward midnight and after that.
Williams said most of his customers on New Years Eve seem to be having a little too much fun, which is entertaining for him.
Its just fun driving cabs because you get some unusual people, unusual customers, he said. (Many are) very intoxicated and hilarious.
Towing companies, on the other hand, usually get called after the party has ended, often with an accident or an arrest.
Thats why were offering service, Fantauzzo said. You have the guarantee (your) car is getting home safely, youre not driving drunk, everyone is safe and everyone is happy at the same time.
