National talk show hosts headlines MLK event at RIT

Henrietta, N.Y. -- A well-known author, activist and radio host will be speaking in the Rochester area Thursday.

Tavis Smiley is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at RITs Expressions of Kings Legacy Celebration, honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

Smiley hosts a daily radio show on PBS and was named one of Time magazines 100 most influential people in 2009.

The event runs from noon until 2 p.m. at the Gordon Field House.

Smiley will also mediate a panel discussion on the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Rochester race riots Thursday at East High School from 6-8 p.m.

Both events are open to the public, but seating is limited.
