Visitor restrictions in place at Strong
Rochester, N.Y. - Strong Memorial Hospital has announced new restrictions for visitors in response to a growing number of flu cases in the community.
Similar guidelines were in place for about two months last year after one patient contracted the flu while in the hospital.
According to a Strong spokesperson, there are 25 patients community-wide who are hospitalized because of the flu. And at least 25 percent of all tests for flu in the community are coming back positive.
The goal, said Ann Marie Pettis, the Director of Infection Prevention, is to keep patients safe from visitors who may not know theyre battling the flu.
We're trying to protect our most vulnerable populations from people coming in feeling like maybe I just got a cold Im going to go visit and then it turns out to be the flu, said Pettis. And then here they are, they already are sick and now they stand to possibly get that on top of it and it can be deadly for small children."
- The following restrictions are in place until further notice:
- No visitors under the age of 14 will be allowed.
- In maternity areas moms are allowed just two visitors.
At the children's hospital only moms and one additional visitor are allowed.
Officials at Rochester General were huddled up in a meeting this afternoon on this issue, but currently no restrictions are in place.
We've yet to hear back from Unity Hospital about any restrictions in place.
