Winter storm grounds thousands of flights

Rochester, N.Y. -- An ice storm making its way up the East Coast is leaving a path of major damage and forcing thousands of flight cancellations Thursday morning.

More than 3,000 flights have been grounded across the country. So far, more than 50 flights going in and out of Rochester have been cancelled, mostly to and from the New York City area, Philadelphia and other points south. Airport representatives said those numbers are expected to increase as the day progresses.

In addition to the flight problems, more than 500,000 people from Georgia to the Carolinas are waking up without power.

In Atlanta, many drivers heeded warnings to stay off the roads. Many of those who did not spun out of the ice.

The storm is being blamed for at least 12 deaths.

As the storm heads north, the damaging effects are expected to shift from ice to snow, with major cities such as Boston and New York expected to get a foots worth by the weekend.

The worst of the storm is expected to bypass our area, but Governor Cuomo is urging people who live in New York City, Long Island and the Albany area to be cautious and stay home Thursday and Friday if conditions deteriorate.
