Debris removal in NYC explosion halfway done

New York (AP) - Workers are halfway finished with removing debris from the site of a New York City explosion that leveled two buildings and killed eight people.

Fire Department of New York spokesman Daniel Glover says 1,500 cubic feet of debris has been hauled from the East Harlem site since Wednesday's explosion. He says an equal amount of debris remains at the site.

Glover says emergency officials are working to reach the basement levels of the buildings to clear the way for investigators to search for clues that might reveal what caused the blast. He says more than 200 workers are at the site Saturday.

Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano has scheduled a news conference for Saturday afternoon to update the public on the progress of recovery efforts.
