Greece police chief sworn in

Greece, N.Y. -- The Town of Greece swore in a new police chief Monday, and you may have heard that it was a family affair.

Not only was new Chief Patrick Phelans family a part of the swearing in, it was his dad Gerald who did the swearing in -- the same Gerald Phelan who was the Greece police chief from 1975 to 1993.

It was a job he was promoted to when the new chief was just 5 years old.

Patrick Phelan went on to become a police officer in Greece and was most recently a captain. He has served in the department for 25 years.

"We've talked a lot in the past few years about trust and earning the public's trust. Trust isn't something you earn in a day; it's something that you have to earn every day, and I know that from experience we'll make it a focus to go and make sure people can trust us every day," Chief Patrick Phelan said. "I think the benefit of promoting from within is that it is going to be a pretty seamless transition. I am not going to make a lot of big changes. I want to keep doing what we are doing and make it better."
