UK research supports '5-second rule'

Birmingham, England -- The so-called 5-second rule may be legitimate, according to a British study.

Researchers at Aston University tested the theory by dropping different kinds of food on the floor for 5 seconds, and then again for 30 seconds, before testing for bacteria.

They found foods that had been on the floor longer had more bacteria. They also found that foods dropped on carpet added fewer bacteria than those dropped on laminate and tile floors.

Researchers concluded the 5-second rule was much more than an old wives tale.
