That's when he entered the intersection of Hulberton Road and State Route 31 in the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer, Orleans County sheriff's deputies said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer tried to avoid the car, but was unable to do so. The truck, driven by Zdenek Smykal, 43, of Palatine, Illinois, hit Kania went off the road, hit a utility pole and rolled on its side, according to investigators.

Kania was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for his injuries.

The tractor-trailer was hauling frozen foods at the time of the crash, and it is unknown if the load was compromised.
