Red Cross volunteers in Yates County

Penn Yan, N.Y. -- Red Cross volunteers were opening up shelters and providing assistance to residents across Yates County affected by flooding.

A shelter was opened Wednesday at Penn Yan Academy and continues to operate in order to provide assistance with food, water and clean-up kits.

About 38 people have gotten assistance at the shelter, including those who needed a place to stay overnight.

The Red Cross said that anyone in a non-emergency situation can speak to a volunteer responder at: 1-877-754-3711.

Those who are interested in donating to the Disaster Relief Fund to help victims of flooding and other natural disasters can call 1-800-REDCROSS, go to www.redcross.org, or text REDCROSS to 90999 to add a $10 donation to their cell phone bills.
