Batavia flaunts proposed Bills stadium site

Batavia, N.Y. -- Genesee County leaders said the best spot for a potential new stadium for the Buffalo Bills just might be in Batavia.

The proposed site just north of the Thruway has several notable advantages on other potential locations like Downtown Buffalo or Niagara Falls. Its halfway between Western New Yorks two largest cities, Buffalo and Rochester, with easy access to Thruway exits 48 and 48A, and its located on farmland thats already considered shovel ready.

What we have here is over 600 acres of virgin land, said developer Tony Mancuso. The site is already approved for multiuse development, stadium-type development. We already have the infrastructure for the water, the sewer, the roads.

One issue for the Batavia location could be the Bills current lease with Erie County. If the Bills leave the county before their lease expires in 2020, they would have to pay a $400 million penalty. Genesee County leaders said theyre not too concerned about that yet.

That's (not) going to stop someone who is going to be paying $800 million to $1 billion for a franchise, said Genesee County Manager Jay Gsell. At that point, that consortium will pay whatever they need and whatever venue they find to be to their best advantage.

I can't imagine any community is ahead of what we've already done, Mancuso said. We're five years into this project, and we've been working on it a long time.
