Fort Drum medics honored for heroics

Fort Drum, N.Y. (AP) -- Four members of an air medical evacuation team based at Fort Drum have received medals for braving heavy enemy fire to rescue a U.S. Special Forces soldier wounded in Afghanistan last year.

Local media report that Chief Warrant Officer 4 Kenneth Brodhead, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Melinda Walden, Staff Sgt. Kristen Halsey and Sgt. Ryan Blomquist received the Air Medal for Valor during a ceremony Thursday at the Army post in northern New York.

The helicopter crew from the 10t Mountain Division's 10th Combat Aviation Brigade flew into the middle of an attack last May 28 and rescued a soldier who had been critically wounded by automatic weapon fire.

Military officials say the crew provided medical care en route to the hospital at Bagram Airfield. The soldier survived his wounds.
