Man sentenced for 2007 murder

Rochester, N.Y. (AP) -- A local man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for murdering a woman in her apartment on the citys east side in 2007.

Supreme Court Justice Alexander Renzi gave Darrell Boyd, 49, the maximum sentence Wednesday in connection with the death of Katharina Lawn on April 20, 2007.

Authorities said Boyd brutally beat and strangled Lawn in her Merchants Road apartment, then set a fire in an attempt to cover up the crime. Lawn, 54, was found beaten and asphyxiated on a burning bed.
Boyd's DNA was found underneath Lawn's fingernails and became a critical piece of evidence in the case.

Prosecutors said Boyd was angry at Lawn for calling the police on him two years earlier during a domestic dispute, which resulted in Boyd spending more than a year in prison.

Boyd had been in custody since his arrest last May and will begin serving his sentence immediately.

Police described it as a cold case that was reopened and investigated in the last year.
