Cleanup begins after building collapse

Penn Yan, N.Y. Cleanup is underway after a partially damaged building, scheduled to be demolished on Monday, collapsed during demolition preparations on Saturday.

The building was generally known as The Owls Nest, and had just been renovated prior to flooding back in May when it partially collapsed, all but sealing the buildings fate before it completely collapsed on Saturday.

It sounded like an earthquake, said Robert Champlin, owner of Lloyds Limited Pub. The power was down for a while, part of my building was hit and my hood fan was busted.

Champlins bar is right around the corner near the building that collapsed. He described the pre-demolition preparations.

He [the contractor] took one part of the wall off and the weight just kind of carried it over, he said. It knocked over two electricity poles with transformers, you could hear all this popping.

Penn Yan Mayor Leigh Mayor Leigh MacKerchar said the building turned out to be in worse shape than originally thought.

Hindsight is always good, but nobody got hurt, he said, referring to the collapse and debris. In the grand scheme of things it shouldnt take too long to clean up at all, maybe by the end of the week.

With the exception of a few apartments and a laundromat, electricity has been restored.
