Iraqi community planting tree for slain Buffalo teen

Buffalo, N.Y. (AP) -- Family and friends of a slain 13-year-old Buffalo boy are inviting the public to a tree-planting ceremony in his honor.

The Iraqi American Society and family of Ameer Al Shammari say the tree they plant Monday will be a living tribute to Ameer, who police say was killed by another 13-year-old last month.

Family friends say Ameer's new iPhone had been stolen from him, and that he may have been trying to get it back when he was strangled. The Associated Press isn't naming the suspect because of his age.

Ameer immigrated to the United States with his Iraqi family 18 months ago. The tree planting will take place at the YWCA Garden in Buffalo.
