Two initiatives to support NY wine and beer

Rochester, N.Y. Two new initiatives to support New Yorks wineries and breweries were announced Thursday by Governor Andrew Cuomo, after the Wine, Beer, Spirits and Cider Summit in April.

The first initiative benefits people who head to local wineries for tastings. Those tastings will now be tax-free at wineries that usually charge a per-person fee.

Before the initiative was put in place, state law allowed an exemption to wineries when products were used at winery sponsored events.

The other initiative is to support the research key beer-brewing ingredients like hops and malting barley with $350,000 in funding.

A portion of the funding will be given to Cornell University to research hops.

New York is home to world-class wineries and crafter breweries, and by launching these initiatives we are looking to further grow the industry, as well as increase the production of locally made products, Governor Cuomo said in a statement. When New York brewers by from New York growers and producers, jobs are created, our economy grows stronger and everyone wins.
