Gates hit hard by storm

by Patrice Walsh

Gates, N.Y. -- Thousands of homeowners and several businesses in Gates lost power shortly after the storm blew in. Powerful winds snapped utility poles which fell on passing cars on Elmgrove Road. No one was injured but it was a scary scene. Elmgrove was closed between Lyell Road and the expressway.

People saw a ball of flame as the wires burst into flames. Several businesses near Elmgrove and Lyell Roads were without power until late Wednesday afternoon. They had to turn customers away and in the case of restaurants, some had to throw prepared food items away.

Caraglio's Pizza tossed out pre-made dough, sauces and cheese because they had no way to keep it cold.

It was dark inside Ultra Image Salon. Lynne Feola and Sue Robinson called customers to let them know they had no power.

RGE crews worked through the night to replace downed poles and lines and restore power.

All hones on Twin Oaks drive lost power. Resident David Damico said the storm rolled in "like a small tornado". Damico lost a large tree limb but said losing power was more of an inconvenience.
Elmgrove Road re-opened late Wednesday afternoon. One southbound lane remained closed.
