Brooks opposes Seneca casino

Rochester, N.Y.  - Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks said she will not support the development of a Seneca Nation casino within the county.

In a letter sent to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, she wrote, "I have concluded that it is not in the best interest of our community to have a casino owned and operating by the Seneca Nation of Indians located in Monroe County at this time."

Brooks also said she would oppose any measure to declare land within Monroe County as sovereign territory

Earlier this year, the Seneca Nation had purchased land in Henrietta for a potential casino site. Those plans were dropped after the town objected to the plans.

The Senecas' president said the nation would pursue other plans in Monroe County - if there was community support

The Seneca Nation released the following statement Friday afternoon:

"The Seneca Nation clearly outlined our position on potential casino expansion in a May 8 letter to Legislator Wilcox. Nothing has changed. While the timing of the County Executive's statement is curious, our position remains as it was two months ago."
